Physical Exams

Why do I need a physical exam?

Physical exams allow Dr. Khan and the team to track your health and identify any problems in their earliest stages. This is important because many health issues, such as hypertension, high cholesterol, and diabetes, don’t cause symptoms early on.

And when you consider that over 60% of Americans have at least one chronic health condition, and 40% have two or more, you see just how critical annual physical exams can be.

A physical exam is also an opportunity for you to ask Dr. Khan about any health concerns you have. He can provide advice and treatments that address issues ranging from obesity to mental health.

What should I expect during a physical exam?

Physical exams usually follow a standard format. You might need to have blood tests before or after your exam.

After you check in with the friendly front desk staff, a clinical team member escorts you to the treatment area to check your height, weight, blood pressure, and blood oxygenation.

Then you meet with Dr. Khan in a private treatment room. He reviews your medical history and asks about your lifestyle and any health concerns or changes.

Dr. Khan listens to your heart and lungs. He looks into your eyes, ears, and throat. Next, he feels your abdomen and spine for abnormalities.

He also performs standard neurological tests to evaluate your balance, grip strength, and reflexes. If you need additional health screenings, he completes them at the end of the exam.

Finally, you and Dr. Khan talk about your exam results and how to improve and protect your health.

What should I bring to a physical exam?

You need to bring a few items to your physical exam appointment, including your ID and insurance card. You should also bring a list of any medications, vitamins, or supplements that you take regularly.

Some patients find it helpful to make a list of questions ahead of time so they don’t forget anything.

What health screenings do I need?

Most adults should have a variety of health screenings at their annual physical exam, including:

  • Blood pressure
  • Complete blood count
  • Cholesterol levels
  • Glucose or A1c tests
  • Thyroid hormone levels
  • Obesity and body mass index (BMI)
  • Skin checks
  • Mental health screenings

Depending on your age and gender, you might also need a pelvic exam, Pap smear, breast exam, mammogram, prostate exam, prostate-specific antigen test, and colon cancer screening. Dr. Khan may also recommend STD testing.
